Loneliness is something no body enjoys but everyone experiences. Some people choose to be lonely, such as Crooks, while others are forced, such as Curley’s wife and candy. Crooks has a bunk all to himself, which would've been nice at times, whereas everyone else had 3 roommates. This isolation made Crooks feel like he was alone.
Feeling lonely isn't in itself a mental health problem, but the two are strongly linked. Having a mental health problem can increase your chance of feeling lonely. According to a nation-wide survey, commissioned by the Mental Health Foundation, 48% of British adults believe that people in the UK are getting lonelier as time progresses, 45% report feeling lonely at least some of the time, and 42% report having felt depressed due to being alone (Griffin, 2010). Importantly, nearly all indicators of loneliness reported in the survey are of the highest.

But just as junk food makes you feel both bloated and empty afterward, social snacking only leaves you with much time wasted and more loneliness than before. The second pitfall is self-comparison.
One of the most common feelings we experience during and after divorce is loneliness. I hear from women all the time asking me, how to cope with feeling lonely after divorce. People can be isolated (alone) yet not feel lonely. People can be surrounded by other people, yet still feel lonely.
